What is a port crane?

 In commercial ports, one of the most widely used types of machinery are port cranes. Port cranes for sale are used for handling, loading, unloading and cargo of containers at the port. They are essentially an integral part in the day to day operations and workings at a regular commercial port. It can be evidently mentioned here that without port cranes, it would be practically impossible to handle large stacks of loads on commercial ships and containers.

What are the main types of port cranes?

In general, there are two types of port cranes  

• Yard cranes - Primarily located in the port’s container yard, yard cranes are used essentially in handling/shifting of containers from yard to the trailers. They are further classified into; Rubber Tired Gantry Cranes and Rail Mounted Gantry Cranes

• Quay cranes - they are primarily used in moving of the laden containers from either shore-to-ship or ship-to-shore, and this is the reason why they are also often referred to as ship to shore cranes as well. 

How much can a port crane lift?

Although commercial ports across the globe have different specifications and operating capacities, port cranes on average can lift around 40 tons to 80 tons of load. But this lifting capacity can vary and some port cranes can even lift a whopping 100+ metric tons of weight.
